Artist Synopsis: The picture of a YORUBA DRUMMER, South West Nigeria, coming home after a performance. Among the Yoruba, the drummer is more than a performer– he is a custodian of memory and tradition– a voice of history and a vessel through which community spirit glows..a storyteller .
The story of the single Yoruba drummer, often showing up uninvited at ceremonies and parties is tied to deep cultural, economic and social traditions among the Yorubas.
In their cultural role, they are custodian of praise poetry and Ancestral memory through the “TALKING DRUM( gangan) or other drums. They can praise individuals, recite family linages and evoke proverbs. This makes their presence highly valued in communal life–weddings, naming ceremonies, funerals, festivals and parties– it’s economic side, a way for livehood without needing structured invitation. They bring Rythm, memory and blessing to every gathering he attends– in exchange for appreciation.
The vibrant attire of the drummer reflects pride of cultural identity.
